Clients are referred by designated services that work with local shelters. Our Welcome Home event generates vital funding to help Detroit families, individuals, and veterans emerge from homelessness. We are all chasing it and will never stop if we love our families and our jobs. Chasing it is the important thing though — never give up drawing a line in the sand.

Homes Furnished: Humble Design Detroit to Serve 2,000th Client in Fight against Homelessness

No one expects you to know everything, so ask for help. There is no shame in stating, ”I don’t now what I’m doing here.” In fact, vulnerability can be a point of strength. When people around you are asked for help, they become engaged in your mission and will help you carry the ball down the field. Surround yourself with people you like — they will become your safety net as well as your staff. To date, Humble Design has helped furnish the homes of 385 local families.

While in line at carpool, I started asking people if they had extra items they could donate. I went around with my friend Ana in her pick-up truck and started collecting items to furnish this home. We called our friends, our neighbors, called people we didn’t know — asking for beds, linens, kitchen items. It took us six weeks to gather all the furniture for the house she found and to decorate it. It was exciting work, but it was a project and, when it was done, I went back Forgotten Harvest. I would come home and somebody would be delivering a crib to my garage, or leaving towels on my front porch.

She said that it felt like her family had returned to a new house after the designers were done. PONTIAC, MICH (WXYZ) — You can help people have a table to gather around, a cozy living room to relax in, and a comfortable bed to get a good nights sleep. They recently talked to a reporter about how they create new homes for their clients, many of them single mothers, from the ground up. Humble Design Detroit is celebrating this milestone with a special home "deco" and reveal on Aug. 27. Humble Design teams in Chicago, Cleveland, San Diego and Seattle – where it also operates – will hold events as well to mark 2,000 clients.

The organization holds small events each month to raise funds and collect furniture. Humble Design®, founded in 2009, has been helping Metro Detroit families and veterans escape the cycle of homelessness for 11 years. But the charity's mission is shifting while precautionary measures limit normal operations. Typically, a caseworker working with an individual or family will make the referral to Humble Design after the individual or family has secured a place to live. Strasberg began collecting items for the family by looking to other friends for donations.

Once the client has been scheduled, the designers begin talking to the client directly to get design ideas. The team of designers utilizes donated items to create furnished spaces for their clients. A house isn’t a home without a warm bed and a placeto gather with family. Humble Design sets families on a course towards a bright and hopeful future. Since its inception in 2009, Humble has turned almost 900 empty houses into clean, dignified and welcoming homes — a simple but powerful idea.

So we called the shelters, (COTS, Haven, SOS) — nine shelters in total — and we said we have all this stuff, and we don’t want it to go to a place where people have to purchase the items, we don’t want it to be resold to fund programs. We want our donations to go directly to families who are in need in Detroit, and we don’t want them to have to pay for delivery. Welcome Home generates vital funding to help families in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties, individuals, and veterans who are emerging from homelessness.

You’ll get stories about the families, individuals, and veterans we help week to week as well as updates on volunteer opportunities. If you’d like to sign up to volunteer, you can see volunteer opportunities and sign up here. Marchitelli and Arnold decided to add in the silver embroidery to give the suit another interesting and unique element.

We opened in Chicago this past year and are thankful to have partnered with CB2 (Crate and Barrel) to provide the much needed funding. We are working on our newest site in Dearborn, which will service veterans exclusively. Recently, a Microsoft employee held a fundraiser which provided us funding to expand to Seattle as well. San Diego is our fifth city and is expected to be up and running by the third quarter of this year. Temporarily unable to proceed with furnishing individual homes, Humble Design's new mission is to assist the shelters directly by delivering much-needed warehouse goods at a time when these safe havens are overrun. After the intake process, Humble Design schedules the client for the “deco day,” which can be up to three to four weeks out.

The lining was sewn with a photo of Arnold as a young football player as well as one of his whole family. On the other side of the jacket, the acronym “LANK” was sewn on the interior. Marchitelli said it stands for “Let All Naysayers Know,” a saying from Arnold’s time playing for the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Each renovation is created on a $500 to $1500 budget per home. Once a family is referred, Humble Design employees meet with the members to assess their needs and to develop a client wish list. Then, employees return to the Humble Design warehouse to tag furniture items for delivery the next morning.

Humble Design ends the revolving door of homelessness by creating homes where families can find peace, strength, and hope. I’m not a native Detroiter, but this community embraced me with both arms. When I started this I knew nothing about the area or nonprofits.

I find balance in leaning on my husband Rob for help. I have always been a big believer that my family and children come first. I might work well into the night after they go to bed, but I need to look them in the eye and ask about their day. I am in the unusual position of loving what I do, but not needing to do it. We need to love what we do with all of our hearts and take breaks when we don’t. Is there a special story or family that stands out in your mind?

We love working with brands and individuals that are interested in engaging with their community in a meaningful way. You’ve been honored and featured in the press a lot for the incredible work you do. There has been so many moments I’m grateful for, it’s hard to pick one.
